Biochars and Engineered Biochars for Water and Soil Remediation: A Review

چکیده

Biochars (BCs) are considered as ecofriendly and multifunctional materials with significant potential for remediation of contaminated water soils, while engineered biochars (E-BCs) enlarged surface areas abundant functional groups can perform even better in environmental remediation. This review systematically summarizes the key physical chemical properties BCs that affect their pollutant sorption capacities, major methods employed modification E-BCs, performance BCs/E-BCs removing types organic (e.g., antibiotics pesticides) inorganic pollutants heavy metals), corresponding removal mechanisms. The BCs—such ash or mineral contents, aromaticity, structures, pH, C=O, -COOH, -OH, -NH2)—depend primarily on feedstock sources (i.e., plant, sludge, fecal) pyrolysis temperature. Ion exchange, precipitation, electrostatic attraction, complexation main mechanisms involved adsorption BCs/E-BCs, whereas hydrogen bonding, pore filling, hydrophobic interaction, van der Waals forces driving uptake pollutants. Despite promises, more pilot field scale investigations necessary to demonstrate practical applicability viability soil

A review of biochars' potential role in the remediation, revegetation and restoration of contaminated soils.

Biochars are biological residues combusted under low oxygen conditions, resulting in a porous, low density carbon rich material. Their large surface areas and cation exchange capacities, determined to a large extent by source materials and pyrolysis temperatures, enables enhanced sorption of both organic and inorganic contaminants to their surfaces, reducing pollutant mobility when amending con...

Physical, chemical and biological characterization of six biochars produced for the remediation of contaminated sites.

The physical and chemical properties of biochar vary based on feedstock sources and production conditions, making it possible to engineer biochars with specific functions (e.g. carbon sequestration, soil quality improvements, or contaminant sorption). In 2013, the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) made publically available their Standardized Product Definition and Product Testing Guideline...

NMR Characterization of Biochars

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) uses a very strong magnetic field and radio frequency (RF) pulses to study the structure of molecules through the resonance frequencies of specific nuclei within the molecule. In order to characterize biochars, several solid-state techniques utilizing C and H nuclei can be used to determine the relative quantity of carbon functional groups, the appr...

Interaction of Sugarcane Bagasse Biochars and Salinity on Availability and Fraction of Cadmium in a Clay Loam Calcareous Soil

Pollution of the environment by heavy metals, especially soil pollution with cadmium (Cd), is one of the most important environmental problems. Also, salinization of soils due to a decrease in irrigation water quality reduces plants growth. To investigate the effect of sugarcane bagasse biochars and salinity on Cd available and Cd fractions in a contaminated soil (15 mg kg-1 Cd), an experimenta...

An index-based approach to assessing recalcitrance and soil carbon sequestration potential of engineered black carbons (biochars).

The ability of engineered black carbons (or biochars) to resist abiotic and, or biotic degradation (herein referred to as recalcitrance) is crucial to their successful deployment as a soil carbon sequestration strategy. A new recalcitrance index, the R(50), for assessing biochar quality for carbon sequestration is proposed. The R(50) is based on the relative thermal stability of a given biochar...
